ConnectMap is a way to structure the fact that we are all connected to each other in some way as friends. It uses the theory of seven degrees of separation (more commonly known as six degrees of separation). It uses the concepts of open content, collaboration and only retaining data that is kind, necessary and true.

ConnectMap - The Concept

To be able to link everyone that is alive on earth together using the idea of seven degrees of separation. It would be nice to be able to link everyone that is alive (and even the dead) together through relations and real life friends. This would expand on the idea of seven degrees of separation but allow for a more open network (to some degree with limitations). Social networks are growing by leaps and bounds. But several problems exists with all the ones I have seen (granted I haven't signed up for all of them nor would I want to).

  • Limited people getting on social networks - Network stops where the social network stops. You can't add someone else's connections even though you know they have them.
  • Collaboration - No collaboration amongst the people that are interested in connecting everyone. Instead you must send all your buddies emails and hope they sign up. You think I'm going to send a CEO of a large corporation a invite to some social networking site like Bebo (I've never signed up for it so I wouldn't know what it's like... but there is no way I'd send such an email and there is even less chance such a person would actually sign up).
  • Horrible photos (they are ugly, stupid and sometimes plain gross) hint: if the photo is bad remove it!
  • Lose all the details. All we want to see is names and maybe some general information. We don't need to know a gazillion things about these people, date of birth, hair color, favorite foods, etc. (you learn that kind of stuff by becoming a real friend to them)!
  • Tracking criminal minded types. So what if your not so great co-worker does drugs. You know it and you know the guy that sells the stuff to him too. So you link them together. Someone else links more people to dope dealer A and then the cops snag them all. Ok, so maybe it wouldn't get that far but it would start eliminating people out of the main areas. You'd see quickly who was a bit shadier and who isn't.
  • It would be great to have a interface that would put all the data together like ThinkMap's Visual Thesaurus. http://www.visualthesaurus.com/ But for now I'm going to start this in a wiki software format.
  • Contributors could be anonymous (and slanderous too). But the good people are going to get more good rep on them then bad and the bad will get more bad rep then good. Or at least that is the theory. Maybe registration should be required. Update See below about Negativity.
  • Genealogy - As mentioned earlier genealogy could fit into this whole scheme too. There are a lot of sites out there that do this already in an open source format... so this isn't so new. But the systems are a bit more complex and go into family history and things. We could link to such sites. But it may be in our best interest not to get into defining living relations too much for now.
  • No negativity - Be positive! Although it is mentioned above about using this for crime fighting and linking gang type activity together in general negativity will be discouraged. Only add negative things to your profile. Not to others.
  • Focus on others - Focus on your friends and acquaintances, not your self. This is about others!
  • Privacy - Do not post anything that isn't already public knowledge. Let's keep date of birth's to no closer then year and month.
  • And last but not least... this is not a way to make friends!!! You need to go out in real life and meet real people! Sorry! Online communications don't count here!

Anyway, expand on the idea. Discuss your thoughts and feel free to contribute.

FAQs

Q: So, this would be like a online networking but with more in depth?

A: Well... not so much as online networking... because frankly I think that stinks for the most part anyway... and there are tons out there that already does that. But this is really taking the six degrees of separation to another level... allowing others to help create the whole thing and not depending on only those who sign up.

Goals

  • Collect data on 1 million living people (at this point the only required data is a name)
  • Process data in interesting ways
  • Geographically on a map
  • By industry
  • By company

To get started

  • Register (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Type your full name (Jordan Christian Peterson) into the search box on the left and click 'Go'.
  • Use the Template page as a reference when creating or adding to a page.
  • Then start putting your friends names down in a list with links to pages to create for them for all their friends.
  • Check out the User's Guide for information on using the wiki software.

Challenges

  • The largest one at the moment that I can think of is people with the same name. We might have to define them by city, state/province, country of birth. Maybe someone has a better idea?
  • Privacy - So even I'm thinking about that too... maybe this isn't such a great idea. But let's see where we go with this and go from there. I didn't mind naming my friends so far but family. That got kind of personal. So maybe we just leave that out.
